1. Please give us some of the background for this project. What is driving your need for research at this time?

2. What is your purpose for asking for research at this time? What do you hope to accomplish by conducting consumer research now? Is there one overriding question you hope this research will answer?

3. Do you have any interest in replicating studies that already exist? (If so, we would need to review the earlier research to be able to complete a proposal. Please include in your response here how you would expect to share the earlier research with us.)

4. What are the objectives for this research – are your specific information needs? (One way to think about objectives is to imagine a questionnaire, since the questionnaire is created to address the objectives. What do you need to ask? Think in terms of the ABCs of consumer information -- attitudes, behaviors, and characteristics.

Attitudes are used to predict behavior. In our loose use of the term, it includes beliefs, likes and dislikes, predispositions, etc. Attitudes include variables such as product characteristics liked or disliked, general predisposition to a brand, interest in purchasing a product, etc.

Behaviors include any consumer actions, but the behaviors of most interest to us involve purchase decisions. Behaviors include variables such as prior purchases of your product, number of times used any product in a specific category, etc.

Characteristics include such variables as gender, age, education, income, lifestage, psychographic , etc.

5. Most likely, we would want to address only a sample of the people in whom you’re interested. Who are these people?

6. Are there budget constraints we should know about? We always look for the most cost-effective way to accomplish your objectives, but if you know that the budget is limited, we will not waste your time with non-affordable designs.

7. What can you tell us about the timing of this project. Are you ready to begin now, or does something have to happen first? Is there a date by which you need results for this project to be effective?

8. What are you looking for in terms of deliverables? Data only? Report? Stand-up presentation?

9. Are there any other project particulars that have not been covered above?

10. Are there specific credentials you need?
